Study on the Effects of Autologous Serum and Artificial Tears
Objective
We wanted to see how autologous serum combined with artificial tears affects corneal sensation and tear film stability in patients with mild to moderate dry eyes after cataract surgery.
Methodology
We studied 150 patients with mild to moderate dry eyes after undergoing cataract surgery from March 2022 to September 2023. They were randomly split into two groups:
- Control Group: 75 patients received artificial tears (polyvinyl alcohol eye drops).
- Study Group: 75 patients received autologous serum along with artificial tears.
The treatment lasted four weeks for both groups, and we monitored their progress and any side effects.
Results
- The study group had a higher success rate (96.00%) compared to the control group (86.67%).
- Both groups experienced improved corneal sensation, but the study group performed better.
- The tear film stability improved in both groups, with the study group showing longer stability and lower inflammation levels.
- Adverse reactions were similarly low in both groups, indicating safety in treatment.
Conclusion
The combination of autologous serum and artificial tears effectively improves corneal sensation and tear film stability without increasing side effects in patients with mild to moderate dry eyes after cataract surgery.
