Effects of Ninjin’yoeito on Patients with COPD and Comorbid Frailty and Sarcopenia
Study Details
Published in the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in May 2024, this study aimed to investigate the effects of Ninjin’yoeito, a herbal medicine, on comorbid frailty and sarcopenia in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Findings
Patients with COPD and fatigue were divided into two groups: Group A (no medication for 12 weeks, followed by 12-week administration) and Group B (24-week continuous administration). The study measured various factors including fatigue levels, COPD symptoms, physical indices, and respiratory function test results.
Results
Group B showed significant improvements in fatigue levels, knee strength, walking speed, muscle mass, COPD symptoms, and lung function compared to Group A. The study concluded that Ninjin’yoeito significantly improved patients’ quality of life, physical activity, muscle mass, and possibly lung function, suggesting potential benefits for frailty and sarcopenia in COPD patients.
