Efficacy and safety of 3D magnetically assisted capsule endoscopy (3D MACE) for upper gastrointestinal and small bowel examination
Abstract
Magnetically assisted capsule endoscopy (MACE) has shown potential for examining the upper gastrointestinal tract. This clinical study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of a novel 3D MACE system for simultaneous upper gastrointestinal and small bowel examination.
Methods
This prospective study was conducted at Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital, involving adult patients undergoing upper endoscopy. The examination involved two stages: first, 3D MACE was used for upper gastrointestinal examination, followed by conventional capsule endoscopy for small bowel examination. The primary outcome was the confirmation of major gastric structures, and secondary outcomes included accuracy for gastric lesions, small bowel examination completion, 3D image reconstruction, and safety.
Results
55 patients participated, with the average examination time for 3D MACE being 14.84 ± 3.02 minutes, and for upper endoscopy being 5.22 ± 2.39 minutes. The confirmation rates of major gastric structures were 98.6% for 3D MACE and 100% for upper endoscopy. Gastric lesions were identified in 43 patients during 3D MACE and in 40 patients during upper endoscopy. The 3D MACE system showed better overall satisfaction and had no significant adverse events.
Conclusions
The novel 3D MACE system demonstrated advanced diagnostic capabilities compared to conventional MACE, allowing for non-invasive simultaneous upper gastrointestinal and small bowel examination. It may serve as a bridge to pan-endoscopy.
