Efficacy of a Mobile Health-Based Behavioral Treatment for Lifestyle Modification in Type 2 Diabetes Self-Management: Greenhabit Randomized Controlled Trial

Efficacy of a Mobile Health-Based Behavioral Treatment for Lifestyle Modification in Type 2 Diabetes Self-Management: Greenhabit Randomized Controlled Trial

Background

Using digital tools can help patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) manage their health better.

Objective

This study looks at whether the Greenhabit mobile app improves T2D management compared to standard care.

Methods

A 12-week study involved 123 participants (50% female, average age 58) diagnosed with T2D. They were recruited from primary care centers in Barcelona, Spain. Participants were divided into two groups:

  • Intervention Group: 61 participants used the Greenhabit app along with standard care.
  • Control Group: 62 participants received standard care and dietary advice.

The Greenhabit app included gaming elements and sent daily messages to encourage healthy habits like nutrition, exercise, and relaxation. Participants set weekly goals and earned points for completing challenges. Data on health metrics were collected at the start, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks.

Results

Both groups saw significant improvements in blood sugar levels (HbA1c) after 6 and 12 weeks:

  • Intervention Group: Average decrease of -0.4% in HbA1c.
  • Control Group: Average decrease of -0.3% in HbA1c.

Additional improvements in the intervention group included:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Weight loss
  • Reduced waist circumference
  • Improved cholesterol levels

Participants also reported better positivity, social support, and work-life balance.

Conclusions

The Greenhabit app showed positive effects on T2D management and reduced cardiovascular risks. While more research is needed, these findings suggest that mobile health apps can be effective tools for managing T2D.
