Electroacupuncture for Recovery After Orthognathic Surgery: A Clinical Trial
Importance
Orthognathic surgery corrects facial deformities but may cause nerve sensitivity issues. Electroacupuncture could help improve sensitivity and motor functions in patients after surgery, yet its use in facial injuries needs more research.
Objective
This study aims to explore how electroacupuncture affects sensitivity and facial function in patients who have undergone orthognathic surgery.
Study Design
We conducted a randomized clinical trial with patients undergoing bimaxillary orthognathic surgery and genioplasty. Participants were divided into two groups: one receiving physiotherapy (PT) and the other receiving physiotherapy plus electroacupuncture (PTEA).
Treatment Details
Both groups will undergo treatment for six weeks. The PT group will have a 50-minute physical therapy session and a 30-minute simulated procedure. The PTEA group will have the same physical therapy session followed by 30 minutes of electroacupuncture.
Outcome Measures
Before treatment, we will evaluate:
- Sensitivity using the SMILE Sensitivity Test-BAURU kit
- Edema with the MD Anderson Cancer Center Head and Neck Lymphedema protocol
- Range of motion with a digital caliper
- Muscle pain and fatigue using numerical scales
- Chewing function with the Chewing Quality Assessment Questionnaire
These assessments will be repeated at three and six months after starting treatment.
Conclusions
This study aims to provide strong evidence on how electroacupuncture can help restore sensitivity and motor function in patients after orthognathic surgery.
