Purpose of the Study
This study aimed to evaluate how tooth color, whiteness, and tooth sensitivity change after teeth whitening treatments. We wanted to see if using a special laser during the whitening process made a difference.
Methodology
We enrolled 20 participants for the study. Each participant underwent two 20-minute whitening sessions using a 40% hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel. One side of the mouth received laser treatment, while the other side did not. We measured tooth color and whiteness immediately after treatment, and again after 7 and 30 days. Tooth sensitivity was assessed during the treatment using a simple scale.
Key Results
Both whitening methods showed significant improvements in tooth color and whiteness right after the treatment. However, these improvements gradually faded over 7 and 30 days. Notably, the laser treatment showed better results in canines and lower central incisors. About 85% of patients experienced mild tooth sensitivity, but there was no notable difference in sensitivity between the two methods.
Clinical Significance
The study suggests that using the Er,Cr:YSGG laser for tooth whitening can enhance color and whiteness changes, particularly in certain teeth, without causing more sensitivity than traditional methods.
Opportunities for Clinics and Patients
Based on the study results, clinics can set measurable goals for improving patient satisfaction with tooth whitening. They can implement this laser-assisted approach to achieve better outcomes for specific tooth types.
