Improving HIV Care for South African Men: Study Overview
Background
To control the HIV epidemic, it’s vital to increase HIV testing and treatment among people living with HIV (PLHIV). Unfortunately, men, especially in South Africa, are less likely to know their HIV status or begin treatment compared to women. Many men are also at a higher risk of serious health issues related to AIDS. Although the message of Undetectable = Untransmittable (U = U) is well-known in wealthier countries, it is not as widely understood in sub-Saharan Africa. We need more studies to see how effective U = U messaging can be for encouraging men to start and stick with treatment.
Study Methods
We will conduct two important trials to test the impact of U = U messages on men’s HIV testing and treatment. The first trial will focus on increasing community-based HIV testing. Men will be invited to test for HIV using either U = U messages or standard messages at various testing sites. The second trial will look at how well men stay in care and achieve viral suppression after starting treatment. This trial will involve men receiving different types of counseling at selected clinics. We will evaluate the effectiveness of these approaches in the Buffalo City and Cape Town areas of South Africa.
Discussion
These trials are groundbreaking in evaluating how U = U messaging can help improve HIV testing, treatment initiation, and viral suppression among African men. If successful, these interventions could influence global guidelines for HIV care.
