Minimal Changes in Sleep During Overnight Blood Pressure Monitoring
Study Overview
This study investigated how overnight ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) affects sleep. While ABPM is the best method for checking blood pressure, it might disrupt sleep. Previous research showed mixed results, and this study is unique because it used polysomnography, a more precise sleep assessment method.
Study Purpose
The goal was to see how ABPM impacts sleep when measured objectively.
Study Method
We studied 10 participants (5 women and 5 men, average age 38) over two nights in a sleep lab. One night included ABPM, and the other did not. The order of these nights was randomized, with breaks of 3 to 10 days in between.
Key Findings
- Increased N2 Sleep: Participants had longer N2 sleep with ABPM (66.4%) compared to without (57.7%).
- Lower Apnea-Hypopnea Index: Fewer breathing interruptions occurred during the night with ABPM (10.5 events/hour) than without it (13.1 events/hour).
- No Negative Feedback: Participants did not report worse sleep quality with ABPM.
- No Significant Differences: There were no major differences in total sleep time, how long it took to fall asleep, sleep efficiency, number of awakenings, or time awake after falling asleep.
Conclusion
ABPM does not negatively impact important sleep measures or personal sleep quality evaluations.
