Peer2Me: A Peer-Supported Program for AYA Cancer Patients
Study Protocol of a Randomised Trial Using a Comprehensive Cohort Design
Background: Young adult cancer patients often experience psychological distress and unmet support needs. The Peer2Me intervention aims to provide peer support to AYA cancer patients to enhance self-efficacy and coping with the disease.
Methods: The study will enroll 180 AYA patients in active cancer treatment, randomized to receive the Peer2Me intervention or a single AYA-specific consultation. Mentees and mentors are matched based on diagnosis, age, and gender. The primary outcome is self-efficacy, with secondary outcomes including anxiety, depression, health literacy, life satisfaction, and social support. Measurements will be taken at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and three months post-intervention.
Discussion: Peer2Me could be a valuable addition to professional support services for young cancer patients. The study aims to make a psycho-oncological intervention available for both mentors and mentees, with plans for long-term continuity.
Trial Registration: The study was retrospectively registered on clinicaltrials.gov (NCT05336318).
