Understanding Burning Eye Syndrome (BES)
Burning Eye Syndrome (BES) is a type of dry eye syndrome that causes pain and discomfort that doesn’t get better with usual treatments. This is because traditional treatments don’t effectively address the nerve issues involved in BES.
Study Purpose
The goal of this study was to test a new treatment plan for BES to see if it works better than standard therapies.
Study Overview
The study included adults aged 18 to 45 who were diagnosed with BES. People with certain eye conditions or serious diseases were not included. The treatment followed for 12 months involved:
- Group 1: Gabapentin (a medication for nerve pain) plus neuroprotective therapy (thioctic acid, ipidacrine, and B vitamins) and 0.4% hyaluronic acid (HA) drops four times a day.
- Group 2: Only 0.4% HA drops four times a day.
Doctors evaluated the effectiveness of treatments through surveys and eye tests at 3, 6, and 12 months.
Key Results
By three months, patients in Group 1 reported feeling better, and tests showed:
- Lower tear osmolarity (indicating better tear quality)
- Healthier nerve fiber structure
- Longer nerve fibers
Group 2 did not show significant improvements during the same period.
Conclusion
The new treatment plan that included gabapentin and neuroprotective therapy was more effective in reducing pain from BES compared to just using HA drops.
Measurable Outcomes
For clinics and patients, clear goals for treating BES include:
- Improving patient-reported pain levels
- Enhancing tear quality
- Improving nerve health in the eyes
