Physician Antipsychotic Overprescribing Letters and Cognitive, Behavioral, and Physical Health Outcomes Among People With Dementia: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial

Clinical Trial Report

Reducing Quetiapine Use in Patients with Dementia

Study Objective: To determine if warning letters to high prescribers of quetiapine can reduce its use among patients with dementia and to assess the impact on patients’ health outcomes.

Key Findings:

  • The intervention successfully reduced quetiapine use among both nursing home and community-dwelling patients with dementia.
  • No adverse effects on cognitive function, behavioral symptoms, depression, metabolic diagnoses, hospitalization, or death were detected.

Implications: Overprescribing warning letters to primary care physicians (PCPs) can safely reduce quetiapine prescribing to patients with dementia, offering a practical solution to promote guideline-concordant care.

Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05172687
