Pigtail with self-retaining bicanalicular intubation combined with Mitomycin C for the treatment of acquired lower punctal stenosis

Study: Pigtail with Self-Retaining Bicanalicular Intubation and Mitomycin C for Lower Punctal Stenosis

Background

The study used a pigtail to create an opening at the lower punctal site in grade 0 stenosis and inserted a self-retaining tube along with Mitomycin C (MMC).

Methods

Patients with acquired lower punctal stenosis (grade 0) were randomly divided into two groups: Group A received treatment with pigtail and MMC 0.02%, and Group B received treatment with pigtail alone. The pigtail was inserted through the upper punctum until its tip reached the occluded punctum, then the site was incised with a scalpel (No. 11), and a self-retaining bicanalicular tube was placed.

Results

The study included 36 eyes from 26 patients. Both groups showed no differences in epiphora score, FDD test, and punctal size preoperatively. However, significant differences were observed postoperatively, with Group A showing better results in epiphora score, FDD test, and punctal size at various time points.

Conclusion

The study concluded that using the pigtail probe, bicanalicular stent, and MMC can be an effective method in the treatment of severe punctal stenosis.
