Comparing Text Messaging and Pillbox Organizers for Heart Failure Medication Adherence
Background
Heart failure affects millions and non-adherence to medication is a common problem. New reminders like text messaging show promise in improving adherence.
Methods
189 heart failure patients were randomly assigned to tailored text messaging (TTM), pillbox organizers, or control. Medication adherence was measured over three months using pill counting and Medication Adherence Rating Scale (MARS).
Results
Both TTM and pillbox groups had significantly higher medication adherence than the control group. TTM group had lower hospitalization rate than others in the first follow-up.
Conclusions
Both TTM and pillbox organizers were effective in enhancing medication adherence. Healthcare providers should consider patient condition and preferences when choosing a method. Future research should address study limitations.
