Study on Nd:YAG Laser Therapy for Periodontitis
Purpose
This study looked at how effective Nd:YAG laser therapy is when combined with traditional cleaning methods for patients with severe periodontitis. We focused on its impact on inflammation and bacteria in the mouth.
Materials and Methods
Fifteen patients with severe periodontitis participated in the study. Their mouths were divided into two sides: one side received standard cleaning (control), while the other side received cleaning along with Nd:YAG laser treatment (experimental). We measured various health indicators before and six weeks after treatment. We also analyzed inflammation markers and the types of bacteria present in the mouth.
Results
The group that received Nd:YAG laser treatment showed:
- A significant decrease in probing depth and bleeding compared to the control group.
- Lower levels of inflammation markers.
However, there was no significant difference in the types of bacteria between the two groups.
Conclusion
Using Nd:YAG laser with standard cleaning methods offers promising short-term benefits for patients with severe periodontitis. Both treatment approaches help shift harmful bacteria to healthier types.
Value of Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are essential for developing safe and effective treatments. It’s important to integrate these findings into everyday medical practice.
