The Efficacy of Early Office Hysteroscopy in Preventing Intrauterine Adhesions after Abortion: A Randomized Controlled Trial
BMC Womens Health. 2024 Jul 13;24(1):400. doi: 10.1186/s12905-024-03247-0.
Background: Intrauterine adhesions (IUA) are a common issue after intrauterine surgery and abortions, impacting fertility. This study aimed to assess if early office hysteroscopy can prevent IUA.
Methods: The trial included 66 women undergoing suction dilatation and curettage (D&C) after first-trimester induced abortion. They were randomly assigned to receive early hysteroscopy or late hysteroscopy (6 months post D&C). The primary outcome was the IUA rate, and secondary outcomes included menstrual patterns and fertility.
Results: In the early hysteroscopy group, 16.1% of women had IUA at the first examination, which disappeared by the late examination. There were no significant differences in pregnancy and live birth rates between the groups.
Conclusions: Early hysteroscopy can detect and resolve intrauterine lesions, potentially improving pregnancy outcomes. However, no statistically significant differences were observed in this trial.
