The iTAPP Study: Evaluating the 15-Method in Primary Care
Practical Solutions and Value
Background: The 15-method is a proven approach for alcohol problems in primary care, as effective as specialized treatment for mild to moderate alcohol dependence in Sweden. A feasibility study in Danish primary care found the method acceptable and feasible.
Aims: Evaluate the 15-method in Danish primary care to lower patients’ alcohol consumption levels and increase the likelihood of alcohol use being addressed during consultations.
Methods: Stepped wedge cluster randomized controlled trial in sixteen general practices in the Region of Southern Denmark. General practitioners and nurses receive training in the 15-method. Patient questionnaires will collect data on alcohol consumption levels, and healthcare professionals will register consultations addressing alcohol. Pharmacological treatment rates and biomarker use will be collected through Danish national registries.
Discussion: The 15-method may help identify alcohol-related problems earlier, providing flexible treatment in a familiar setting. Healthcare professionals will be equipped with tools and training to address a traditionally challenging topic. Primary care holds a unique position to identify hazardous and harmful alcohol use, leading to potential public health and economic benefits.
Trial Registration: Clinicaltrials.gov NCT05916027. Retrospectively registered 22 June 2023.
