The Role of Community Health Workers in Cancer Pain Management
Study Overview
This study explores how community health workers (CHWs) can help patients with cancer pain, especially those from rural areas or Hispanic/Latino backgrounds. Currently, few care models include CHWs, and this research aims to understand their potential role better.
Study Purpose
We wanted to learn from experienced CHWs about their ability to work with cancer patients and their care teams. We also looked at the challenges and supports they might face in delivering a new pain management program called ASCENT.
Methods Used
We followed a structured research approach and gathered information through surveys, interviews, and focus groups with CHWs. We asked them about their comfort with the proposed tasks and explored their training needs and any barriers they might encounter.
Key Findings
A total of 12 CHWs participated in the study. They felt confident in their ability to engage with patients remotely. However, they identified several challenges, including:
- Working in unfamiliar areas
- Availability of resources
- Technology issues
- Specific challenges related to implementation
- Patient motivation levels
Conclusions
CHWs believe they can effectively support cancer patients but highlighted the need for additional training and resources.
