Study Summary: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment in Knee Osteoarthritis
Objectives
This study looked at how effective a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is for older adults with knee osteoarthritis (OA) compared to standard care. We wanted to see if CGA could improve pain, physical function, and stiffness over six months. We also checked on frailty and quality of life.
Study Design
We conducted an exploratory study across five geriatric centers in Europe. Seventy older adults, mostly women, participated. They were split into two groups: one receiving CGA and the other receiving standard care.
Intervention
The CGA group had a thorough assessment, which helped identify their specific needs and tailor their care. The control group received standard treatment.
Main Results
After six months, the CGA group had slight improvements in pain and function, but these were not statistically significant. No serious side effects, such as falls or hospitalizations, were noted.
Conclusions
CGA may help manage knee OA in older adults, particularly regarding pain and function. However, more extensive studies are needed to confirm these results.
