The role of vitamin D in amelioration of oral lichen planus and its effect on salivary and tissue IFN-gamma level: a randomized clinical trial

The Role of Vitamin D in Management of Oral Lichen Planus

Background and Objectives

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease affecting the oral mucosa. Vitamin D (VD) has been studied for its potential immune-modulatory and anti-inflammatory effects in managing OLP. This study aimed to investigate the role of VD in the management of VD-deficient OLP patients and its effect on IFN-γ levels.

Methods

40 OLP patients were randomly assigned to receive systemic steroids with VD supplements or systemic steroids only. Blood samples were collected to measure VD levels and evaluate clinical symptoms. Salivary and tissue IFN-γ levels were also measured. The clinical pharmacy team devised a checklist to record all team interventions, including drug interactions, medication dose issues, and patient-related concerns.

Results

After one month of treatment, patients receiving VD supplements showed greater pain relief, resolution of clinical lesions, and reduction in severity of lesions compared to those receiving steroids only. There was also a significant reduction in salivary and tissue IFN-γ levels in the VD supplement group.

Conclusion

The study suggests a significant role for VD as an adjunct to standard therapies for OLP lesions, particularly in its suppressive effect on pro-inflammatory cytokines. Salivary IFN-γ levels may serve as a valuable prognostic marker for monitoring OLP progression. Inter-professional collaboration between dentists and clinical pharmacists improved patient care and treatment quality.
