Visual Performance of Optical Films Utilizing Spatio-Temporal Optical Phase Technology
SIGNIFICANCE:
Spatio-Temporal Optical Phase technology uses film pairs with optical elements on single-vision spectacle lenses. It has the potential to reduce myopia progression, but its visual performance is unclear.
PURPOSE:
This study aimed to evaluate the visual performance of film pairs containing optical elements compared to a film pair with no optical elements.
METHODS:
In a randomized, single-masked, bilateral wear study, 42 participants aged 18 to 40 years wore four test designs (E, F-1, G, and F-2) and the control. Subjective data (clarity of vision, vision at night, while walking, overall satisfaction, and willingness to purchase) were collected after 3 days. Visual acuity-based measures were collected at dispensing and while wearing spectacles with no film. Statistical analyses were performed, and significance was set at 5%.
RESULTS:
The control outperformed all test designs in subjective ratings, willingness to purchase, and binocular high-contrast visual acuity at 40 cm. Clarity of vision was significantly worse with F-2 compared to F-1 and G. The tests did not differ in other subjective ratings or visual acuity-based measures. There were no differences between the control and spectacles with no film for any visual acuity-based measure.
CONCLUSIONS:
All four test film pairs showed reduced visual performance compared to the control, similar to other myopia management devices. Three of the four test film pairs did not differ in visual performance.
