Wearable Telemedicine for Heart Disease Management in Elderly Patients
Background
Chronic coronary heart disease (CHD) is common in older adults and is a leading cause of death and health issues.
Study Purpose
This study explored how effective telemedicine is for managing elderly patients with CHD using remote monitoring.
Methods
We enrolled 1,248 elderly patients with CHD and split them into two groups:
- Wearable Telemedical Management (WTM) Group: Used wearable devices for remote monitoring, received real-time alerts, and had virtual health consultations.
- Traditional Follow-Up Management (TFM) Group: Had in-person check-ups every two months to track their health.
Results
After 12 months:
- The WTM group had fewer hospitalizations (HR 0.59, p<0.0001).
- The WTM group also experienced fewer major heart-related events (HR 0.60, p=0.0012).
Conclusion
Using multiparameter telemedicine can effectively manage elderly patients with CHD and lower the chances of being readmitted to the hospital.
Clinical Trial Importance
Clinical trials are essential for developing safe and effective treatments. We need to incorporate these findings into everyday medical practice.
