Acceptability and implementation potential of colorectal cancer screening and health literacy training: A qualitative study among general practitioners in deprived areas

Acceptability and Implementation of Colorectal Cancer Screening Training

Background

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major health issue, being the second leading cause of cancer deaths in France. Although regular CRC screening can save lives, many people, especially those with low health literacy and lower income, do not participate. This study looked at how general practitioners (GPs) in underprivileged areas accepted an online training program focused on health literacy (HL) and CRC screening, and how to promote and expand this training.

Methods

This qualitative study was part of a larger trial conducted in four regions of France. We interviewed 22 GPs to gather their thoughts and suggestions about the training program.

Results

Most GPs (16 out of 22) found the training to be acceptable and useful. They appreciated its flexibility and relevance to their needs. The health literacy module was particularly popular, as it introduced new ideas for improving communication with patients. However, some GPs felt that the training could be more interactive.

Conclusion

The study showed that GPs are open to this e-learning training, especially if it is concise, self-paced, and focuses more on health literacy. The training encouraged GPs to think about their communication with patients, leading to better interactions with those who have low health literacy, not just regarding screening.
