Results from the LIVING Study: Predicting Postpartum Diabetes in Women with Gestational Diabetes
Objective: To investigate the link between abnormal glucose values on antenatal oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and the risk of postpartum diabetes in South Asian women diagnosed with gestational diabetes (GDM).
Methods: This analysis was conducted on participants from the Lifestyle Intervention IN Gestational Diabetes (LIVING) study, comprising women with GDM from 19 centers in Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka. Postpartum diabetes was determined using American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria.
Key Findings: Data from 1468 women with GDM showed that the risk of developing diabetes postpartum was significantly influenced by the type and number of abnormal glucose values on antenatal OGTT. The incidence of postpartum diabetes ranged from 3.8 to 19.0 per 100 women-years, depending on the number and type of abnormal values. Participants with three abnormal values had a 3.56 times higher risk of postpartum diabetes compared to those with one abnormal value.
Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of considering the type and number of abnormal values on antenatal OGTT in predicting the risk of postpartum diabetes. These findings could aid in developing precision medicine approaches for identifying high-risk women and guiding targeted interventions.
