Caregivers’ Views on Pediatric Care Intervention
Objective
We aimed to understand how parents and caregivers feel about the CommunityRx-Hunger program, which helps address food insecurity and other social health risks for hospitalized children. We also sought their views on how clinicians can share information about these social issues sensitively.
Methods
We conducted detailed interviews with 23 caregivers of children in the hospital from April 2022 to April 2023. These caregivers were part of the CommunityRx-Hunger trial. The program includes three main components:
- Education on health-related social risks (HRSRs).
- Information on community resources related to HRSRs.
- Ongoing support for 12 months.
We analyzed the interview data to find common themes.
Results
Most caregivers were mothers (20) and identified as African American or Black (19). We found three key themes:
- Positive Experiences: Caregivers felt unaware of community resources available to help them and believed they were well prepared after leaving the hospital.
- Barriers: Caregivers expressed concern that sharing information about HRSRs might negatively impact them.
- Recommendations: Many caregivers suggested simply providing information without probing into their needs or risks.
Conclusion
Overall, caregivers responded positively to the CommunityRx-Hunger program. Regularly sharing resource information with caregivers, regardless of their specific needs, may help reduce anxiety about sharing health-related social risks.
