COMEDI Study: Improving Cataract Surgery Outcomes
Introduction
The COMEDI study explores the benefits of combining monofocal and extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOLs) in cataract surgery. EDOF lenses offer a wider range of vision compared to monofocal lenses, and are a promising alternative to multifocal lenses which can cause visual side effects.
Methods and Analysis
This study involves 88 bilateral cataract patients and compares the outcomes of combined monofocal and EDOF IOL implantation versus bilateral monofocal IOL implantation. The primary measure is distance corrected intermediate visual acuity, with additional assessments including near visual acuity, reading speed, patient-reported spectacle independence, contrast sensitivity, and more at the 3-month follow-up.
Ethics and Dissemination
The study protocol has been approved by the ethical committee of the University Hospital of Brussels. The trial is registered under NCT06002399.
