Study Summary: Subgingival Instrumentation with Diode Laser in Periodontitis Treatment
Objective:
The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of subgingival instrumentation (SI) with and without diode laser (DL) in treating periodontitis.
Methods:
- Participants were randomly assigned to receive either SI with DL or SI alone.
- Clinical parameters and patient-reported outcomes were measured at baseline, three months, and six months post-treatment.
- Assessment included bleeding and plaque scores, pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and participants’ perception of pain, swelling, bleeding, bruising, and root sensitivity.
- The impact on quality of life was evaluated using the General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) at six months.
Results:
- Both treatment groups showed significant improvement in clinical parameters at three and six months.
- No statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of reduction in deep pocket depths or overall impact on quality of life.
Conclusion:
Using diode laser as an adjunct to subgingival instrumentation did not lead to significant additional improvement in clinical parameters or patient-reported outcomes over the six-month observation period.
