Background
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has increased stress-related issues like anxiety and depression among veterans. This situation requires effective mental health support, but traditional resources are often limited. As a result, we are exploring new therapies.
Objective
This study evaluates how well immersive 360° video-based Virtual Reality (VR) therapy works when added to standard rehabilitation programs for Ukrainian veterans dealing with anxiety and depression.
Method
We conducted a randomized controlled trial with 69 participants. They were divided into two groups: one received daily VR therapy along with standard rehabilitation, while the other group only received standard rehabilitation. We measured anxiety and depression levels before and after the intervention using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). We also tracked changes in mood immediately before and after each VR session.
Results
The findings showed that participants experienced a quick improvement in mood and a decrease in anxiety after each VR session. Overall, anxiety levels dropped by up to 14.5%, and depression levels decreased by up to 12.3% by the end of the program. These results were consistent across all trials, confirming that 360° VR therapy is a reliable and scalable short-term rehabilitation option.
Conclusions
Immersive VR therapy offers an effective and accessible way to help manage the psychological effects of war, especially within the constraints of Ukraine’s healthcare system.
Opportunities for Clinics and Patients
Based on the trial data, clinics can set clear goals for using VR therapy to reduce stress-related symptoms. This approach can lead to measurable outcomes that enhance patient care.
