Efficacy of Pulse Methylprednisolone in Treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome due to Malaria: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial
Objective
The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of pulse methylprednisolone (MPS) therapy in patients with malaria-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
Materials and Methods
The trial involved 44 patients in a randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled study. The participants were divided into two groups: one receiving pulse MPS therapy and standard treatment for ARDS, and the other receiving a placebo along with standard treatment. Various outcomes were measured, and statistical analysis was conducted to compare the two groups.
Results
Out of 30 patients who passed the initial screening, 66.7% were discharged from the hospital, while 33.3% succumbed to death in the intensive care unit. No significant differences were found in various measures between the two groups, indicating that pulse MPS therapy did not show clear benefits in managing malaria-related ARDS.
Conclusion
The study concluded that pulse MPS therapy did not demonstrate clear benefits in managing malaria-associated ARDS, and its continuous use may even lead to worsened outcomes. The authors emphasized the need for the development of new, effective therapies and robust surveillance systems for early diagnosis.
Disclosures: The study was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee, and all participants provided written informed consent. The authors reported no conflicts of interest or acknowledgments.
