Immediate Effects of Soft Tissue Mobilization and Percussive Massage on Balance in Young Adults with Pes Planus

Study Overview

This study looked at how two treatments, IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) and PMT (Percussive Massage Therapy), affect balance in young adults with flat feet (pes planus).

Methodology

We diagnosed pes planus using the navicular drop test. A total of 51 participants were randomly divided into three groups:

  • IASTM Group: 15 participants
  • Percussive Massage Group: 18 participants
  • Control Group: 18 participants

We assessed balance using the Flamingo and Y Balance tests before and after the treatments. We used statistical tests to compare results between and within the groups.

Results

There was no significant difference in static balance among the groups. However, there was a significant improvement in dynamic balance, particularly in the IASTM group, which showed notable improvements in most directions tested.

Conclusion

IASTM applied to the plantar fascia of individuals with pes planus significantly improves dynamic balance compared to no treatment and percussive massage, even with a small sample size.
