Randomized Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial of Dutasteride for Reducing Heavy Drinking in Men
ABSTRACT
Prior studies suggest that dutasteride, a medication used for benign prostatic hypertrophy, may help reduce heavy drinking in men by affecting certain brain chemicals. This study aimed to test the effectiveness and safety of dutasteride for this purpose.
METHODS
142 men with heavy drinking habits were randomly assigned to take either a placebo or 1 mg of dutasteride daily for 12 weeks. The goal was to see if dutasteride could help them reduce their drinking levels.
RESULTS
The study found that men taking dutasteride were more successful in reducing their drinking compared to those taking the placebo. During the last month of treatment, 25% of the dutasteride group had no hazardous drinking, while only 6% of the placebo group achieved the same. Dutasteride was well tolerated, with stomach discomfort and reduced libido being the most common side effects.
CONCLUSION
Dutasteride at a daily dose of 1 mg was effective in reducing heavy drinking in men seeking treatment. It was especially beneficial for those with high levels of drinking to cope motives.
