Background
Cocaine and methamphetamine use disorders are serious health issues. Unfortunately, there are currently no FDA-approved treatments available for these conditions. The STIMULUS study is a clinical trial that aims to explore a new treatment option called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for individuals with moderate to severe cocaine or methamphetamine use disorders.
Study Overview
This study is designed to include 160 participants who are diagnosed with moderate to severe cocaine or methamphetamine use disorders. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either active rTMS or a placebo treatment (sham). The goal is to provide at least 20 treatment sessions over 8 weeks.
Goals of the Study
The study aims to:
- Assess how effective rTMS is in reducing drug use and cravings.
- Evaluate the effects of rTMS on mood, anxiety, sleep, and other health measures.
- Explore the use of brain activity monitoring (electroencephalography) to measure treatment response.
Importance of the Study
Current research on rTMS for stimulant use disorders is limited. This study aims to address these gaps and provide valuable data for future larger trials.
Next Steps
We hope the findings from this study will support the development of effective treatments for individuals struggling with cocaine and methamphetamine use disorders.
