Varying Clinical Effectiveness of Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections in Knee Osteoarthritis
Objective:
To study the effectiveness of single, triple, and quintuple platelet-rich plasma injections in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Methods:
– 120 patients with knee osteoarthritis were divided into three groups: PRP1, PRP3, and PRP5.
– Patients were evaluated using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index-VA3.1 (WOMAC-VA3.1) at various intervals.
Results:
– 106 patients completed the study, showing significant improvement in WOMAC pain scores across all groups.
– Three and five PRP injections were more effective in reducing knee pain, stiffness, and improving physical function compared to a single injection.
– No significant difference was observed between PRP3 and PRP5 at follow-up intervals.
Conclusions:
– Three or five PRP injections are safe and substantially more effective than a single injection in reducing knee pain and improving physical function.
– No significant difference was observed in the efficacy of three or five injections.
– Therefore, we recommend using three PRP injections for grade I-III knee osteoarthritis treatment.
