Importance of Ultrasound Neuromodulation in Alzheimer’s Disease
As dementia cases rise and treatment options remain limited, ultrasound neuromodulation presents a new potential therapy for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). More research is needed to understand its full capabilities in treating brain disorders.
Study Overview
This study evaluated the effects of transcranial pulse stimulation (TPS) on patients with AD. It was conducted at the Medical University of Vienna from January 2017 to July 2022, involving 60 patients who were already receiving standard treatments.
Research Design
The trial was randomized, double-blind, and sham-controlled. Participants were divided into two groups: one received real TPS treatment first, followed by a sham treatment, while the other group experienced the opposite sequence. Each participant underwent 12 sessions of TPS.
Main Outcomes Measured
Neuropsychological tests were conducted to assess cognitive function at various intervals: baseline, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after treatment. Key measures included:
- Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD) corrected total score (CTS)
- Functional MRI results
- Beck Depression Inventory-II scores
Key Findings
Results showed an improvement in cognitive scores for younger patients (under 70 years) who received real TPS, with a notable increase in the CERAD score. In contrast, older patients did not show significant improvement. Additionally, TPS was linked to reduced depressive symptoms and enhanced brain activity in memory-related areas.
Conclusions
The study suggests that TPS may be a safe and effective add-on therapy for younger patients with AD, improving cognitive function and reducing depression.
