Videoconference-Delivered Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Family Caregivers of People With Dementia: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Background

Family caregivers of individuals with dementia often experience mental health challenges. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapy that may help improve their mental health. This study explored how effective a videoconference-delivered ACT program is for these caregivers.

Objective

The goal of this pilot study was to see if a 10-week videoconference ACT program could reduce depression and improve mental health for family caregivers compared to a group that only received educational materials.

Methods

Thirty-three family caregivers were randomly assigned to either the ACT program (16 participants) or the control group (17 participants). They were assessed on their depressive symptoms and other mental health measures before the program, after the program, and three months later. The study used statistical methods to analyze the results.

Results

The caregivers in the ACT group showed significant improvements in stress and psychological quality of life compared to the control group. They also reported a meaningful decrease in depressive symptoms. Other improvements included reduced anxiety, stress, caregiver burden, and feelings of guilt. These benefits were observed both immediately after the program and three months later.

Conclusions

The videoconference ACT program appears to be effective in improving the mental health of family caregivers of individuals with dementia. Future research should involve larger groups of caregivers to confirm these findings and assess long-term effects.

Opportunities for Clinics and Patients

Based on the trial data, clinics can set clear goals for implementing videoconference ACT programs to support caregivers. Measurable outcomes include reductions in depression, anxiety, and caregiver burden.
