Background
The European guidelines recommend using digital mammography (DM) or digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) for screening women who are at average risk for breast cancer. A study called IMPETO in Tuscany, Italy, is looking into how effective DBT is for screening. There is not much information about how women feel about this new technology, so a survey was conducted to find out more.
Methods
In this study, 441 women aged 45 were surveyed to understand their knowledge of tomosynthesis and their views on early breast cancer diagnosis. The survey included questions about their background, awareness of tomosynthesis, breast density, and where they get information about breast health.
Results
Only 12% of the women knew what tomosynthesis was, and those who had previous mammograms were more likely to be aware of it. Over half of the participants (56.7%) had already undergone a mammogram. Education played a significant role; women with a secondary education were more likely to have had a mammogram before age 45. Most women who had a mammogram were advised by their gynecologist, while some made the decision on their own or followed their general practitioner’s advice.
Conclusion
This study shows that there is a need for better education about breast cancer screening and its risks. Tailored communication is essential to bridge the knowledge gap across different education levels without encouraging unnecessary screenings.
Opportunities for Improvement
Based on the trial data, clinics can:
- Increase awareness of digital tomosynthesis among women.
- Educate patients about the importance of early breast cancer diagnosis.
- Utilize targeted communication strategies to reach women with varying educational backgrounds.
Measurable Outcomes
Clinics should aim to:
- Increase the percentage of women aware of tomosynthesis from 12% to at least 30% within a year.
- Improve the number of women participating in screenings by 20% over the next year.
