Clinical Trial Overview
Title: Comparative clinical trial of Langenlianqiao oral liquid and Lianhuaqingwen capsule in treating mild COVID-19 cases.
Published in: J Health Popul Nutr. 2024 Oct 12;43(1):158.
Objective
The goal of this study was to assess how effective Langenlianqiao (LGLQ) oral liquid is in treating COVID-19, providing valuable information for clinical treatment.
Study Design
This was an experimental clinical study conducted at Changde Hospital with three groups of patients confirmed to have COVID-19.
Participants
A total of 253 patients participated in the study.
Methods
Patients were divided into three groups:
- LGLQ treatment group: 100 patients
- Lianhuaqingwen (LHQW) treatment group: 100 patients
- Placebo control group: 53 patients
The study compared the major symptoms, how long symptoms lasted, hospital stay duration, and infection duration among the groups.
Results
The LGLQ and LHQW groups had shorter infection (6.8 days) and hospital stay (7.4 days) compared to the placebo group (10.0 days). The LGLQ group had a lower rate of fatigue (4.0%) compared to LHQW (14.0%) and placebo (15.1%), although these differences were not statistically significant.
For cough treatment, the LGLQ group performed significantly better than both LHQW and placebo groups. LHQW was effective in reducing dry cough compared to placebo, while LGLQ did not show a significant difference.
However, neither treatment reduced the duration of symptoms for patients who had pre-existing conditions.
Conclusions
The LGLQ treatment improved clinical symptoms of COVID-19 and reduced hospital stay and infection duration, showing similar antiviral effects as LHQW. This research could enhance future antiviral therapy approaches.
