Summary of Research on Behavioral Interventions for Autism
Background: Behavioral interventions for autism, specifically Naturalistic Developmental Behavior Interventions (NDBIs), have gained popularity as effective treatments. However, there is a lack of research on which NDBI method is most effective for parents and children with autism spectrum disorders.
Methods:
- 32 randomized controlled trial studies were included in the network meta-analysis, examining the efficacy of different NDBIs.
- Databases searched: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Medline, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), CINAHL, and Wanfang.
Results:
- Parents using Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) reported significant improvements in their children’s social skills, language skills, and parenting fidelity.
- Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) showed significant improvements in children’s language and motor skills.
- Improving Parents as Communication Teachers (ImPACT) significantly improved parent fidelity compared to treatment-as-usual (TAU) and parental education intervention (PEI).
Conclusion:
- The study suggests that ImPACT can be an early intervention for newly diagnosed children with ASD, ESDM can be part of the second stage of parent training, and PRT can be used in a third stage with sufficient training intensity to further improve language, social, and motor skills in children with ASD.
