Detection of Elder Abuse Through Emergency Care Technicians Screening Tool Revision for Home-Based Primary Care (DETECT-RPC): a cluster randomised controlled trial study protocol

Detection of Elder Abuse Through Emergency Care Technicians Screening Tool Revision for Home-Based Primary Care (DETECT-RPC)

Study Overview

The prevalence of elder mistreatment (EM) is concerning, especially among older adults with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, where it can be as high as 75%. EM significantly impacts quality of life and increases mortality risk. Home-based primary care (HBPC) providers play a vital role in identifying and addressing this issue. This study aims to adapt the existing DETECT screening tool for use by HBPC providers to improve detection and reporting of EM.

Study Phases and Methods

The study has two main phases with four substudies:

  • Substudy 1: Identifies barriers clinicians face in recognizing and reporting EM in HBPC and suggests necessary adaptations for the DETECT tool.
  • Substudy 2: A cluster randomized controlled trial that assesses how well the adapted DETECT-RPC tool helps clinicians identify and report older adults at risk of EM.
  • Substudy 3 and 4: Use interviews with clinicians and caregiver/care recipient pairs to evaluate the tool’s effectiveness and the experiences of those involved.

Ethics and Results Sharing

The study is approved by the Institutional Review Board of the University of Texas Health Science Center and will be shared through peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
