Diabe-teach: An Innovative Game to Improve Diabetes Knowledge in Medical Students
The rise of diabetes worldwide makes it essential for medical students to understand this disease thoroughly for better diagnosis and management.
Why Traditional Teaching Methods Fall Short
Standard teaching methods often miss interactive elements that help students engage and remember information effectively.
Study Overview
This study tested a new board game called “Diabe-teach” to see if it could help medical students learn more about diabetes compared to regular self-study. Conducted with 56 preclinical students at Dubai Medical College for Girls, participants were split into two groups: one used the game while the other studied alone.
Measuring Success
The students’ knowledge was measured through tests before and after the learning process, along with feedback on their engagement and experiences.
Key Findings
- Both groups improved their test scores significantly (p < .001).
- The game group gave more correct answers and were better at identifying what they didn’t know.
- Students using the game felt more confident, improved their communication skills, and preferred the game over traditional methods.
Conclusions
The “Diabe-teach” board game effectively teaches complex medical topics, boosts knowledge retention, and encourages self-assessment. This supports the idea that game-based learning can be a valuable addition to standard medical education.
Future Implications
More research could explore how this approach could benefit other medical fields as well.
