Effects of Acupuncture on Bell’s Palsy
This study looked at how acupuncture can help patients with Bell’s facial paralysis during the early stages of their condition. We tested this using a method called surface electromyography to measure muscle strength and fatigue in the face.
Study Overview
Sixty patients with acute Bell’s palsy were divided into two groups:
- Observation Group: Received acupuncture on specific facial points.
- Control Group: Received oral medications (prednisone acetate and methylcobalamin tablets).
Both groups received treatment until the 28th day of illness. We measured muscle activity and facial function before treatment and after the interventions.
Key Findings
Both groups showed improvements in muscle strength and fatigue levels:
- Facial muscle activity increased significantly.
- The observation group showed better results than the control group.
- Recovery time was shorter for those receiving acupuncture.
- The observation group had a higher recovery rate (93.33%) compared to the control group (76.67%).
These results suggest that acupuncture not only helps improve muscle strength but also reduces fatigue and speeds up recovery during the acute stage of Bell’s palsy.
