Effects of adding electro-massage to manual therapy for the treatment of individuals with myofascial temporomandibular pain: a randomized controlled trial

Effects of Adding Electro-Massage to Manual Therapy for Myofascial Temporomandibular Pain

Summary:

Study aimed to determine if adding electro-massage (ES) to manual therapy (MT) is more effective than MT alone for treating myofascial temporomandibular pain.

Methodology:

46 participants with myofascial temporomandibular pain were split into two groups. Group 1 received MT on the neck and jaw areas. Group 2 had ES on the neck along with the same MT. Both groups had a 2-week treatment.

Results:

Group 2 showed significant improvements in pain intensity, pressure pain threshold, mouth opening, and cervical range of motion compared to Group 1.

Conclusion:

Combining ES with MT provides better results for myofascial temporomandibular pain treatment compared to MT alone.
