Effects of Maitland mobilization technique on upper extremity function in stroke survivors with spasticity: An experimental study

Effects of Maitland Mobilization Technique on Upper Extremity Function in Stroke Survivors with Spasticity

Study Overview

The study aimed to explore the impact of Maitland joint mobilization technique on the recovery of upper extremity function in stroke patients with spasticity.

Methods

71 patients with upper extremity flexor spasm after stroke were enrolled and randomly assigned to either the experimental group (treated with Maitland mobilization technique) or the control group (received conventional rehabilitation treatment) for 8 weeks.

Results

Both groups showed significant improvement in several assessments after 8 weeks. The experimental group showed greater improvements in Fugl-Meyer motor assessment-upper extremity (FMA-UE), box and block test (BBT), and functional independence measure (FIM) compared to the control group.

Conclusion

Maitland joint mobilization technique can effectively enhance the motor function of the upper extremity and reduce spasticity in stroke patients.
