Effects of Wearable Activity Trackers on Joint Function and Quality of Life in Osteoarthritis
Background
Osteoarthritis (OA) causes pain and limits daily activities. Physical activity (PA) is essential for treatment. Wearable activity trackers (WATs) can help people monitor their activity levels and encourage sustainable exercise.
Study Overview
This study analyzed the impact of self-monitoring PA with a WAT on joint function and health-related quality of life in individuals with hip and knee OA. It involved 160 participants in southern Sweden, divided into two groups:
- One group used a Supported Osteoarthritis Self-management Program (SOASP) with a WAT for 12 weeks (86 participants).
- The other group only used the SOASP (74 participants).
Methods
Participants completed questionnaires to assess joint function and quality of life at the start and after 3, 6, and 12 months. The study used various statistical methods to analyze the data.
Results
Out of the 124 participants analyzed, there were no significant differences between the two groups regarding joint function or quality of life changes. Both groups showed slight improvements in pain and symptoms.
Conclusion
Using a WAT did not significantly affect joint function or quality of life. High initial scores may have influenced these results. Future studies should focus on inactive individuals with OA and consider devices that track a wider range of activities, like cycling or swimming.
