Efficacy of intradermal tranexamic acid injection following IPL for the treatment of persistent post acne erythema: a split-face, controlled trial

Understanding the Study on Post-Acne Erythema

Post-acne erythema (PAE) is a common issue after acne treatment, causing emotional distress and social challenges for many individuals. This study explores the effectiveness of combining Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy with intradermal tranexamic acid (TXA) injections to reduce PAE.

Study Overview

In this trial, 33 patients aged 16 to 45 with ongoing PAE participated. They were divided into two groups:

  • One group received IPL treatment with TXA injections.
  • The other group received IPL treatment with a placebo (normal saline).

Each participant had three treatment sessions spaced three weeks apart. Improvements in PAE were evaluated one month after the final session.

Results of the Study

Most patients reported improvement in their skin condition, but the statistical analysis did not show significant differences between the groups. However, IPL alone also provided notable improvements.

Key Findings:

  • 53% of patients experienced no adverse effects from the TXA injections.
  • The most common side effect was temporary redness at the injection site, affecting 27.3% of patients.

All injection site reactions resolved within 24 hours.

For Clinics:

  • Consider using IPL therapy as a primary treatment for PAE.
  • Incorporate TXA injections as an adjunct treatment, keeping in mind the mixed results.
  • Monitor patients for any side effects and ensure they are mild and temporary.

For Patients:

  • Discuss with your healthcare provider about the potential benefits of IPL and TXA treatments for PAE.
  • Be aware that improvement may vary, and discuss expectations before starting treatment.

Future Directions

Ongoing research is needed to optimize treatment protocols for managing PAE effectively. Clinics should consider pilot projects to track the real-world impact of these treatments using AI tools for better data analysis and patient outcomes.
