Facing Depression: A New Approach to Treatment
Study Overview: This clinical trial aims to improve depression treatment by evaluating a new training method that combines cognitive restructuring with facial expression techniques. The focus is on how our thoughts and physical expressions can impact depression.
Background
Depression is often linked to negative thinking patterns. Current treatments, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), address these thoughts but often have high drop-out rates. This study explores enhancing CBT by incorporating emotional and physical expressions.
Study Method
We will conduct a randomized controlled trial with 256 participants, split into two groups: those with depression and those without. Participants will be divided into four groups:
- Cognitive Reappraisal Training (CR)
- CR with Anti-Depressive Facial Expressions (CR + AFE)
- Facial Muscle Training for Anti-Depressive Expressions (AFE)
- Sham Control Group
Each participant will undergo a 90-120 minute session, with follow-ups two weeks later. We will measure changes in mood and other factors like emotional state and physical responses.
Importance of This Study
If successful, this approach could lead to faster and more effective treatments for depression by integrating physical expressions into therapy.
