Feasibility and Acceptability of a Self-Guided Digital Family Skills Management Intervention for Children Newly Diagnosed With Type 1 Diabetes: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Digital Family Skills Program for Children with New Type 1 Diabetes Diagnosis

Background

Family dynamics significantly affect how children with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) manage their condition. The period right after a T1D diagnosis can be very stressful for families. Providing support during this time can help improve health outcomes. A self-guided digital program offers an effective way for families to learn essential management skills.

Objective

We aimed to test if a self-guided, online family skills program—covering social support, family problem-solving, communication, and behavior change—could help improve health outcomes for children diagnosed with T1D.

Methods

We evaluated 37 children recently diagnosed with T1D from a pediatric clinic. Parents used online modules that focused on family management skills. We measured how many parents completed these modules and gathered feedback on their experiences.

Results

Out of 37 participants, 31 (84%) initiated the online program. Of these, 25 (81%) completed some content, and 15 (48%) finished all 5 modules. Completion rates were higher when both parents participated together. Many families preferred receiving all modules at once rather than spaced out. The feedback highlighted the program’s acceptability, with families noting it helped them manage T1D better and expressing interest in continuing the program.

Conclusions

This study shows that a self-guided digital family support program is both feasible and acceptable when started after a child’s T1D diagnosis. Participation and completion rates were promising, similar to other health programs. Such interventions can help families manage T1D challenges effectively, while also being cost-efficient and flexible compared to traditional methods.
