Cancer Clinical Trial Summary
Background
This study explored a new approach called the Comprehensive Oncology Rehabilitation and Exercise (CORE) algorithm. It aims to connect women diagnosed with breast cancer to exercise and rehabilitation services right from their diagnosis through their treatment journey.
Methods
The trial involved 72 women with early-stage breast cancer who needed surgery. They were divided into two groups: one that used the CORE system and another that received standard care. The CORE group answered two questionnaires about their physical activity and functional abilities during their clinic visits. Based on their answers, they were directed to appropriate services like exercise programs or rehabilitation. The success of the program was measured by how many participants completed the questionnaires and followed through with referrals.
Results
Most participants (93%) completed the questionnaires. Of those referred to services, 62% followed through. Feedback from focus groups was mostly positive, indicating that the CORE system was well-received.
Conclusions
The CORE algorithm is both feasible and acceptable for women with newly diagnosed breast cancer planning for surgery. It was also positively viewed by clinic staff.
