iDiabetes Platform: Enhancing Diabetes Care in Scotland
Introduction and Aim
Diabetes is a major global health issue, leading to serious health problems and increasing deaths. One challenge is applying research findings to improve diabetes care. We propose a solution through a new digital platform called ‘intelligent Diabetes’ (iDiabetes). This platform aims to provide personalized diabetes care in Scotland and evaluate its effects on overall health outcomes such as mortality, hospitalization rates, kidney function, and blood sugar control.
Methods and Analysis
The impact of iDiabetes will be tested in a large study involving up to 22,500 diabetes patients. General practices in NHS Scotland’s Tayside Health Board will participate as study groups. Each practice will include about 400 patients, with up to 60 practices involved. Patients will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: the iDiabetes platform, an enhanced version called iDiabetesPlus, or standard diabetes care.
Patients will be included when they come for annual diabetes screenings or are newly diagnosed. We will measure key health outcomes after two years, focusing on:
- Overall mortality rates
- Hospitalization rates
- Declines in kidney function
- Improvements in blood sugar levels
We will also analyze the cost-effectiveness and user satisfaction of the iDiabetes platform.
Ethics and Dissemination
This study has received ethical approval from the NHS Health Research Authority. Results will be shared through publications, scientific conferences, and updates on our study website and social media.
