Understanding the Impact of Acupuncture on Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Introduction: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a common mental health issue that often starts in adolescence or early adulthood. It results in persistent anxiety and can be worsened by Partial Sleep Deprivation (PSD), which is a significant risk factor for developing GAD. This condition can affect cognitive abilities, such as attention and control. Although acupuncture has shown promise in treating GAD and sleep issues, we need to better understand how it works, especially for those experiencing both GAD and PSD.
Study Design:
In this clinical trial, we will enroll 56 participants with GAD and PSD, alongside 28 healthy controls. Participants with GAD and PSD will be split into two groups: one receiving acupuncture and the other receiving sham acupuncture. The effectiveness will be assessed using various scales, including the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) and others focusing on sleep and anxiety. Participants will undergo treatments three times a week for two weeks, with evaluations occurring at the start, one week, and two weeks into the study.
Value of the Study:
This research aims to uncover how acupuncture can help reduce anxiety and improve cognitive functions in people affected by both GAD and PSD.
Clinical Trial Registration:
Registered on ClinicalTrials.gov: ChiCTR2400082221 on March 25, 2024.
