Study: Non-diabetes Status After IGT Diagnosis and Long-Term Risks
Background
The study aimed to clarify the association between years of non-diabetes status after diagnosis of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and the risk of long-term death and cardiovascular outcomes.
Methods and Findings
540 individuals with IGT from the Da Qing Diabetes Prevention Study were included in a post hoc analysis. Participants were monitored for 30 years after a 6-year lifestyle intervention trial. The analysis showed that maintaining non-diabetes status for at least 4 years was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of death and vascular complications.
Conclusions
The study observed that maintaining several years of non-diabetes status after IGT diagnosis was linked to a significant reduction in long-term risk of death and vascular complications. Maintaining at least 4 years of non-diabetes status may be necessary to achieve a significant risk reduction for most outcomes.
